Tense Chart

 

What is tense?

Status of verb against time

 

Present Tense

Simple Present

Any simple work when status of time is unknown or not defined.


Syntax:

Statement: Subject + Verb + Object.

Example: I eat Rice.

 

Question: Do/Does + Subject + Verb + Object ?

Example: Do I eat rice?

 

Negative: Subject + Do / Does + Not + Verb + Object.

Example: I do not eat Rice.

 

Negative Question: Do/Does + Not + Subject + Verb + Object ?

                                Do/Does + Subject + Not + Verb + Object ?

Example: Do I not eat rice?

                Do not I eat rice?

 

Force: Subject + Do / Does + Verb + Object.

Example: I do eat Rice.

 

Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Preposition + Object.

Example: Rice is eaten by me.

 

 

Present Progressive / Continuous

Something started yet not finished.

 

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb (Ing) + Object.

Example: I am eating Rice.

 

Question: Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Am I eating Rice?

 

Negative: Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Not + Main Verb (Ing) + Object.

Example: I am not eating Rice.

 

Negative Question: Auxiliary Verb + Not + Subject + Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Am not I eating Rice?

 

Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Not +Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Am I not eating Rice?

 

Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Auxiliary Verb + Being + Past Participle Form Of  Verb + Preposition +  Object.

Example: Rice is being eaten by me.

 

 

 

Present Perfect

Some work started and finished but effect remains.

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Have/Has + Past Participle Form Of  Verb + Object.

Example: I have eaten rice.

 

Question: Have/Has + Subject + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Object?

Example: Have I eaten rice?

 

Negative: Subject + Have/Has + Not + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Object.

Example: I have not eaten rice?

 

Negative Question: Have/Has + Not + Subject + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Object?

Example: Have not I eaten rice?

Have/Has + Subject + Not + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Object?

Example: Have I not eaten rice?

 

Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Have/Has + Been + Past Participle Form of Verb + Preposition + Object.

Example: Rice has been eaten by me.

 

 

Present Perfect Progressive / Continuous

Some work started and continuing for long period.

 

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Have/Has + Been + Main Verb (Ing) + Object + Since /For +  Remaining.

Example: I have been eating for two hours.

 

Question: Have/Has + Subject + Been + Main Verb (Ing) + Object+ Since /For +  Remaining?

Example: Have I been eating for two hours?

 

Negative: Subject + Have/Has + Not + Been + Main Verb (Ing) + Object+ Since /For +  Remaining.

Example: I have not been eating for two hours.

 

Negative Question: Have/Has + Not + Subject + Been + Main Verb (Ing) + Object +

       Since /For +   Remaining?

Example: Have not I been eating for two hours?

Have/Has + Subject + Not +Been + Main Verb (Ing) + Object + Since/For +   Remaining?

Example: Have I not been eating for two hours?

Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Have/Has + Been + Being + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Preposition + Object.

Example: Rice has been being eaten by me for two hours.

 

 

Past Tense

 

Simple Past

Some Common usual habits or common incidents in past.

 

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Past Form Of Verb + Object.

Example: I ate rice.

 

Question: Did + Subject + Verb + Object ?

Example: Did I eat rice?

 

Negative: Subject + Did + Not + Verb + Object.

Example: I did not eat rice.

 

Negative Question: Did + Not + Subject + Verb + Object?

Example: Did not I eat rice?

                                Did  + Subject + Not + Verb + Object ?

Example: Did I not eat rice?

 

Force: Subject + Did + Verb + Object.

Example: I did eat rice.


Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Past Form of Auxiliary Verb + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Preposition + Object.

Example: Rice was eaten by me.


Past Progressive / Continuous

Some work stated and continued for a time.

 

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb (Ing) + Object. (Single Work)

Example: I was playing football.

 

Statement: When + Subject + Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb (Ing) + Object + then

                 + Subject + Past Form Of Verb + Object. (Double Work)

Example: When I was playing then the phone rang

 

Statement: When + Subject + Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb (Ing) + Object + then

                 + Subject + Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Main Verb (Ing) + Object.(Double Work)

Example: When I was playing then she was eating rice.

 

Question: Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Was I playing football?

 

Negative: Subject + Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Not + Main Verb (Ing) + Object.

Example: I was not playing football.

 

Negative Question: Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Not + Subject + Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Was not I playing football?

Past form of Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Not +Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Was I not playing football?

Past Perfect Progressive / Continuous

Future  Tense

 

Simple Future

Some common work in future.

 

Active Voice

Statement: Subject + Shall/Will + Verb + Object.

Example: I shall eat rice.


Question: Shall/Will+ Subject + Verb + Object ?

Example: Shall I eat rice?

 

Negative: Subject + Shall/Will + Not + Verb + Object.

Example: I shall not eat rice.

 

Negative Question: Shall/Will + Not + Subject + Verb + Object ?

Example: Shall not I eat rice?

Shall/Will + Subject + Not + Verb + Object ?

Example: Shall I not eat rice?

 

Passive Voice:

 

Statement: Subject + Shall/Will + Be + Past Participle Form Of Verb + Preposition + Object.

Example: Football will be played by me.

 

Future Progressive / Continuous

Some common work in future which will be continued.

 

Active Voice

 

Statement: Subject + Shall/Will + Be + Main Verb (Ing) + Object.

Example: I shall be playing football.

 

Question:  Shall / Will  + Subject + Be + Main Verb (Ing) + Object ?

Example: Shall I be playing football?

Example: I shall not be playing football.

Example: I shall have played football.

Example: I shall have played football before you will reach stadium.

 

Question: Shall/Will + Have + Subject + Past Participle Form Of  Verb + Object ?

Example:  Shall have I played football?

 

Negative: Subject + Shall/Will + Have + Not + Past Participle Form Of  Verb + Object.

Example: I shall have not played football.

 

Negative Question: Shall/Will + Have + Not + Subject + Past Participle Form Of  Verb +

       Object ?

Example: Shall have not played football?

Passive Voice:
